Your Hosts |
This event is hosted by and proceeds benefit The Harbor, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
The Harbor is a non-profit organization that provides and promotes a healthy social environment for people in Shippensburg who simply cannot be around alcohol. It is a safe place for community - a place that allows people to gather and hang out without the influences or temptations of alcohol. The Harbor is a place where people can shoot pool, throw darts, sip coffee or a rootbeer, and enjoy another's company, and it has been created for the community by the community of Shippensburg and surrounding area as another option. We are not on a prohibition kick or an abstinence campaign and are not in any way against establishments and organizations that offer, serve, or even promote alcoholic drinks. We are on the understanding that we are serving those who simply cannot be around the temptations because of their addictive behaviors and we want to provide them with an alternative. The Harbor, while it does make some money with sales, has been and will continue to be funded by grants, fundraisers, and donations, and is set up to provide receipts for charitable donations with our 501.C3 status.
There are numerous groups, programs, and businesses that address the rapid problem of alcohol and drug abuse in our area, but the purpose of these organizations are to treat the individual for [alcohol or drug] addiction. However, what happens after the program is completed? Often, the individual goes back to the friends and lifestyle that started and fed the addiction in the first place. After all, how many people socialize over a beer or stronger alcoholic beverage whether it is at someone's home, a restaurant, a picnic, or a bar? We simply and passionately feel the need to provide another option. Beyond the "other option", we also are offering support to the families and friends of the addict. At this time, we are housing for a nominal or no fee, seven 12-step groups and looking to open our calendar up to host hobbyist groups and book studies.
Our Mission Statement: To provide a safe, alcohol-free place within our community for the enrichment of individuals, couples, and families seeking a life of sobriety.
Our goals include seeing lives changed, healthy relationships built, addictions broken, successful recovery stories experienced and shared, and empowerment to live a healthy life. This will only be achieved by working in unity and collaboration with individuals, businesses, and churches. The Harbor is a community service that needs to be sponsored by the community. We are therefore, actively seeking help from the community and asking for your help. Please consider giving a monetary amount, items for silent auctions, or gift card for your establishment. With great appreciation and excited to work together,
Melissa J. Mankamyer, Director
